Pricing options

Being able to read and write in Hmong can open up the door to so much, so I want to make it accessible to as many people as possible. I am offering a sliding scale payment for this course. See below for a detailed description of each level.

You know your finances best.

A sliding scale payment means you evaluate your own financial situation and choose the price that you can pay based on your situation. Everyone gets the same content.

This is an exercise in intentionality and accessibility. I ask that each person who wants to take this course make an honest evaluation of their situation and select the price that they can afford. Being honest with what you can afford will support the community’s access to this much-needed course and will also make it possible for me to continue providing Hmong language learning material.

Your payment helps to pay for the digital tools I use to host, create, and maintain this course as well as my time in developing the course and giving feedback on practice assignments.

Consider paying the higher price on the scale if:

  • You have a full time job and make a middle class income or higher in your area or state

  • You have investments, retirement accounts, or an inheritance

  • You are able to travel for fun regularly

  • You are able to go out and eat multiple times a week

  • You want to support other people’s ability to access this course

Consider paying the mid-level price if:

  • Your finances are stable, and you’re able to pay your bills every month

  • You have some investments and at least one retirement account

  • You can go out to eat on special occasions

  • Your income supports others in your household or in your family

Consider paying less on the scale if:

  • Your income is not stable or if your budget doesn’t allow you to have a class such as this

  • You receive public assistance in any form

  • You are a student in high school or college

  • You cannot afford to go out to eat or drink

What People Are Saying about This Course

“The layout of this course is well put together and the examples Pa gives help tremendously! I've gotten better at recognizing and pronouncing more Hmong words.”

Matthew

“I appreciate the course structure Pa has created for Hmong in 30. Each week's lessons are broken down into 'bite-sized' modules, which makes learning Hmong more approachable and less intimidating. Even though the course is self-paced, I can feel Pa's passion for Hmong radiating throughout both the course and its materials. Pa makes learning Hmong more enjoyable and less pressured by offering an excellent foundation. There's no magical formula to becoming fluent in Hmong, but building a strong foundation is crucial, and Pa has excelled in providing it. I'm excited to finally be able to learn Hmong in a way that fits my schedule and keeps me motivated!”

Stacey Lo

“Seeing Pa’s dedication and bright personality on Instagram motivated me to reach out and start the course. Prior to starting, I had some background in reading and writing but was least confident in speaking due to the tones. This course offers practical exercises, in addition to in depth explanations for each vowel, consonant, and tone, and example words in Hmong and English which help build vocabulary. There is no other resource that I have seen that concisely explains the Hmong alphabet and provides practice all in one place. Pa also provided timely constructive feedback in a thoughtful and kind manner on the assignments provided throughout the course. I would highly recommend this course to anyone interested in learning Hmong. Pa's heart is obvious in all she does. It is truly inspiring to see, and an honor to take part in the work she is doing to preserve the Hmong language.”

K.L.

“My name is Amy. I recently married into a Hmong family and want to learn Hmong so I can communicate with my mother-in-law, who doesn't know much English. I took the Read & Write Hmong course as a first step to learning the language. Paj makes learning so simple and I highly suggest this course to anyone looking to learn Hmong - whether it is your first language, or you are just starting to learn like me. Knowing how to read and write has been so helpful! Now I understand the various sounds in the language and know how to pronounce them properly. This is making vocabulary so much easier to learn. My mother in law is so happy and proud of me for the progress I have made. Taking this course was such a good decision! Thank you Paj!”

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this class only for people who already speak Hmong?

I designed this course specifically for people who already speak a little bit of Hmong or who speak Hmong fluently but don’t yet know how to read and write in Hmong. However, if you don’t know how to speak Hmong yet and want to learn, this course can be useful in teaching you the basic sounds of the Hmong language, including the tones. This can be super helpful in helping you to prepare to become a fluent Hmong speaker.

Which dialect will you cover?

In this course, I’ll be covering all the vowels, consonants, and tones of the Hmong language (to my knowledge) and will be providing practice materials in both White Hmong and Green Mong/Mong Leng. While I am not a Green Mong/Mong Leng speaker, I can read and write in this dialect. The material I will be using for Green Mong/Mong Leng practice was written by a native speaker of this dialect.

What language will you be teaching in?

I will be teaching in English.

Which alphabet will you be teaching?

I will be teaching Romanized Popular Alphabet, which is the most widely used Hmong writing system in the world.

Is this class appropriate for kids?

This class is appropriate for older teenagers and adults. It is a self-paced class which can be challenging for kids.

Will there be set times for this class?

There is no set time for this class since it is self-paced. The only set times are office hours, which are optional.

How long will it take to complete this class?

Because this class is self-paced, there is no telling how long it will take each person. However, if you do one lesson (including all the practice materials for that lesson) every other day, you should finish in 30 days. I will also be offering a cohort model for those who wish to have accountability. Accountability includes a check-in email from me at the beginning of the week and office hours at the end of the week. With this model, you will do one module per week, and be done with the course in nine weeks.

Is there homework?

This class has practice assignments that go with each lesson.

Does this class teach people how to speak Hmong?

No, this class does not teach people how to speak Hmong. This class teaches people how to read and write in Romanized Popular Alphabet, the most widely used writing system for the Hmong language. If you do not speak Hmong yet, this may be a good introduction to the sounds of the Hmong language.

Is there a scholarship?

I have a limited number of scholarships. Please email me at [email protected] if you need a scholarship.

What should I do if I want to purchase this course for multiple people (students, participants, etc.)?

If you would like to make a bulk purchase of this course, please email me at [email protected]

How long will I have access to the class?

After purchasing, you’ll have access to this course for 365 days.

Pa Vue

Creator of Hmong Language Movement

Pa is the founder of Hmong Language Movement. She is currently a PhD student at UC Berkeley, studying language revitalization and reclamation, but she has nearly a decade of professional experience in higher education. Having worked in many different contexts with students of all ages and backgrounds, she teaches with an open mind. Her philosophy is that students bring just as much knowledge to the classroom as teachers, and learning is most rewarding when both students and teachers are creative with the way they learn. Pa is also a writer, poet, reader, and lifelong learner. You can read some of her writing and poems at www.bypavue.com. One of her goals is to publish a book of poetry and short stories in the Hmong language.
