I want you to be able to have conversations right away. In this one-of-a-kind Hmong language course, you’ll learn how to introduce yourself and talk about your age, where you live and where you’re from, your occupation, and your relationship status in the White Hmong dialect. You’ll also learn how to ask others for this information.

Whether this is the first time you’re learning Hmong or whether you’re brushing up on Hmong that you haven’t used in a while, I designed this course to be enjoyable, easy to use, and immediately applicable to your life. We’ll dive into how to form sentences and use numbers, dates, classifiers (words that categorize nouns with similar characteristics), and so much more.

What's included in the course?

This course will have an introduction and five modules covering the following topics:

  • Introduction to the Course and Hmong Language

  • Module 1: Introducing Yourself

  • Module 2: Talking about Your Age

  • Module 3: Talking about Where You Live & Where You’re From

  • Module 4: Talking about Your Job

  • Module 5: Talking about Your Relationship Status

  • Final Project

Each module will have two lessons. Each lesson will include vocabulary specific to that topic, grammar/syntax, and practice worksheets that you can download.

In each module, you’ll also have the chance to do more language practice through a task-based homework assignment.

This is a dripped course.

That means the course material will be released week by week on the Thinkific website where my courses are hosted. I'm doing this intentionally so that you aren't overwhelmed. You will receive an email when the lesson is posted, and you'll have all week to complete the lesson and homework assignment.

This is not a live class.

To accommodate more people from more time zones, I will not be teaching this material live. The material is pre-recorded and will be released at the beginning of the week, so that you have can revisit lessons and review materials as much as you want throughout the week. You can take breaks, return to challenging topics, and fully absorb the knowledge at your own pace.

You will have access to me through email, DM, and text message through out the week. If needed, I sometimes respond with audio recordings or videos to help you with language pronunciation.

Once everyone turns in their homework assignments, I will record a language review video that covers some of the areas everyone needs more support with and send this video to everyone.

When you come to the language review session, it will not be the first time you will be seeing and learning the material because you will have already reviewed it during the week.

Conversation Hours

Each week, you'll have the opportunity to sign up for a conversation hour with me or another fluent Hmong speaker to practice speaking Hmong. We will have a few different dates and times available each week.

Conversation hours might be one-on-one, with one learner and one fluent speaker, or multiple learners with one fluent speaker. This will depend on fluent speaker availability and how many people sign up.

Conversation hours are your opportunity to practice the Hmong we learned in class and more. While they're not required, they're included in your tuition, so you are encouraged to take advantage of them to practice Hmong.

How long will this course last?

This course will last 12 weeks if you review the materials and complete the homework when they're assigned. There will be one lesson per week with a final project so that you have the time to really absorb and practice the material.

Once you sign up for this course, you'll have access to it for a full year, so you can return to the material as many times as you want throughout this year.

This is more than just a vocabulary building course.

I will take you through some of the basics of Hmong language so that you can continue learning Hmong even after you complete the course. Whether you want to document your family's history, engage in conversations with elders, or be able to pass the language on to your children, this course is designed to help you get started.

Because I want to give proper time and attention to the students in this class, it will be capped at 15 students. This course will close when it fills up or on September 5, 2025.

Class starts on September 8, 2025.

This is the first day that I will releasing the modules. The first conversation hours will be open the week of September 29th to give learners a bit more time to become comfortable with speaking. After that, learners can sign up weekly until the end of the course.

You can start speaking Hmong within a few weeks.

Sliding Scale Payment Options

Being able to speak Hmong is an honor and a joy. I want to make Hmong accessible to as many people as possible. I am offering a sliding scale for this course. Pay what you can afford. Read more about this below.

You know your finances best.

My own experience speaking Hmong has taught me how valuable it is to be able to communicate in a language that’s so intimately tied to our culture, heritage, and history. That’s why I want to make this course accessible to as many people as possible. I am offering a sliding scale payment for this course. A sliding scale payment means you can evaluate your own financial situation and choose the price that you can pay based on your situation.

This is an exercise in intentionality and accessibility. I ask that each person who wants to take this course make an honest evaluation of their situation and select the price that they can afford. Being honest with what you can afford will support the community’s access to this much-needed course and will also make it possible for me to continue providing Hmong language learning material.

Your payment helps to pay for the digital tools I use to host, create, and maintain this course as well as my time in developing the course and giving feedback on homework assignments. For this course specifically, your payment also goes toward the host(s) of conversation hours.

Once you sign up for this class, you'll have lifetime access to the materials.

Consider paying the full price on the scale if:

  • You have a full time job and make a middle class income or higher in your area or state

  • You have investments, retirement accounts, or an inheritance

  • You have your house(s) paid off

  • You are able to travel for fun regularly

  • You are able to go out and eat multiple times a week

  • You want to support other people’s ability to access this course

Consider paying the mid-level price if:

  • Your finances are stable, and you’re able to pay your bills every month

  • You have some investments and at least one retirement account

  • You can go out to eat on special occasions

  • Your income supports others in your household or in your family

Consider paying less on the scale if:

  • Your income is not stable or if your budget doesn’t allow you for a class such as this

  • You receive public assistance in any form

  • You are a student in high school or college

  • You cannot afford to go out to eat or drink

Scholarships

Testimonials

Here's what others are saying about Hmong Language Movement classes.

“Seeing Pa’s dedication and bright personality on Instagram motivated me to reach out and start the course. Prior to starting, I had some background in reading and writing but was least confident in speaking due to the tones. This course offers practical exercises, in addition to in depth explanations for each vowel, consonant, and tone, and example words in Hmong and English which help build vocabulary. There is no other resource that I have seen that concisely explains the Hmong alphabet and provides practice all in one place. Pa also provided timely constructive feedback in a thoughtful and kind manner on the assignments provided throughout the course. I would highly recommend this course to anyone interested in learning Hmong. Pa's heart is obvious in all she does. It is truly inspiring to see, and an honor to take part in the work she is doing to preserve the Hmong language.”

K.L.

“The layout of this course is well put together and the examples Pa gives help tremendously! I've gotten better at recognizing and pronouncing more Hmong words.”

Matthew

“I appreciate the course structure Pa has created for Hmong in 30. Each week's lessons are broken down into 'bite-sized' modules, which makes learning Hmong more approachable and less intimidating. Even though the course is self-paced, I can feel Pa's passion for Hmong radiating throughout both the course and its materials. Pa makes learning Hmong more enjoyable and less pressured by offering an excellent foundation. There's no magical formula to becoming fluent in Hmong, but building a strong foundation is crucial, and Pa has excelled in providing it. I'm excited to finally be able to learn Hmong in a way that fits my schedule and keeps me motivated!”

Stacey Lo

““My name is Amy. I recently married into a Hmong family and want to learn Hmong so I can communicate with my mother-in-law, who doesn't know much English. I took the Read & Write Hmong course as a first step to learning the language. Paj makes learning so simple and I highly suggest this course to anyone looking to learn Hmong - whether it is your first language, or you are just starting to learn like me. Knowing how to read and write has been so helpful! Now I understand the various sounds in the language and know how to pronounce them properly. This is making vocabulary so much easier to learn. My mother in law is so happy and proud of me for the progress I have made. Taking this course was such a good decision! Thank you Paj!””

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this class only for people who already speak Hmong?

This is an introductory Hmong language course for beginners. You do not need to be able to speak Hmong to take this course.

Which dialect will you cover?

In this course, I’ll be covering White Hmong.

Which language will you be using to teach?

I will be using mainly English since this is an introductory course.

Do you need to be able to read and write Hmong to take this class?

No, you do not need to be able to read and write Hmong to take this class. However, being able to read and write Hmong (even if it’s just a little) will be very helpful. You might even learn how to read and write while taking this course!

I also offer a course in reading and writing Hmong that you can take. This class is fully online and can be a good optional prerequisite to the speaking course.

Will you be covering Hmong history and culture in this class?

Hmong history and culture are not the goals of this class, so I will not be teaching them specifically. However, because culture and language are interdependent (culture shapes language as much as language shapes culture), when someone teaches a language they’re naturally going to teach some culture, too. I’m also not a historian, but I will provide context for learning based on my own knowledge and experience as a Hmong person and speaker when needed.

Is this class appropriate for kids and teens?

The content of this class is appropriate for adults. Additionally, while lessons are released week by week, and there is a lot of guidance and a language review and conversation hour, the content requires self-motivation, which can be challenging for kids and teens.

Will there be set times for this class?

No, there are not set times for this class. Classes are pre-recorded and are to be completed at whatever time is best for the student.

Conversation hour days and times will also be set by the host.

Is there homework?

This class has homework for each module and a final project.

Do I need to do the homework?

There is no way for me to force you to do the homework, but you are encouraged to do the homework to help you learn Hmong. Homework will include worksheets, listening to Hmong songs, watching Hmong language videos, and creating content using what you learned in each lesson.

How do I sign up for the conversation hours?

Sign-up information will be shared with you later in September.

How long will it take to complete this class?

This course will take 12 weeks to complete.

Is there a scholarship?

No, there is currently no scholarship available. I hope to offer some in the future.

What should I do if I want to purchase this course for multiple people (students, participants, etc.)?

If you would like to make a bulk purchase of this course, please email me at [email protected]

How long will I have access to the class?

After purchasing, you’ll have access to this course for a year from the day of purchase.

If I choose the $157 or $207 payment, will I have access to less content?

No. Everyone has access to the same content. The scaled payment is meant to make this course accessible to everyone.

Are there any options for monthly payments?

Thinkific, the platform that I use for courses, offers a variety of options to pay, including Affirm, Afterpay, and Klarna. I do not run or control the payment methods.

What is the refund policy?

Once the class starts on September 8, 2025, if you are not satisfied with your purchase, please email me at [email protected] within 7 days of September 8, 2025 for a refund. There is no refund after 7 days.

Pa Vue

Creator of Hmong Language Movement

Pa is the founder of Hmong Language Movement. She is currently a PhD student at UC Berkeley, studying language revitalization and reclamation, but she has nearly a decade of professional experience in higher education. Having worked in many different contexts with students of all ages and backgrounds, she teaches with an open mind. Her philosophy is that students bring just as much knowledge to the classroom as teachers, and learning is most rewarding when both students and teachers are creative with the way they learn. Pa is also a writer, poet, reader, and lifelong learner. You can read some of her writing and poems at www.bypavue.com. One of her goals is to publish a book of poetry and short stories in the Hmong language.
